Course Aims
This course is part of the Careskills Academy Train the Trainer Programme. Whether you are completing just this course or the whole programme, you will still need to undergo an observation and assessment with one of our experienced Assessors, to ensure that you are competent to deliver First Aid training. Your observation and assessment will be carried out virtually.
The course begins by explaining the processes, information and safeguards needed before initiating first aid training, including how to risk assess your training. This module then establishes your underpinning knowledge by reflecting on the definition of first aid and the necessary relative guidance such as policy and procedures, first aid assessments including primary and secondary surveys.
Module 2 reviews what the law says about first aid, including the actions organisations must take to promote safety in the workplace and guidance around consent. It also identifies the equipment in the workplace that must be inspected under legislation and your responsibilities for recording and reporting incidents and accidents.
Module 3 reflects upon the knowledge regarding different elements of first aid reinforcing training requirements. It identifies the specific aspects of first aid that your learners will need to understand. For example:
- Why is the recovery position important?
- When should Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation be used?
- How to recognise when someone is choking, having an asthma attack
- What are the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, hypo/hyperglycaemia, seizures and strokes?
Module 4 looks at the practical elements of first aid. Trainers must be able to convey information and demonstrate techniques and this module covers aspects such as placing a casualty in the recovery position, undertaking CPR, how to administer first aid to someone who is choking, experiencing seizures, shock or anaphylaxis, bleeding, with burns/scalds, fractures/sprains.
In the final stage of the course, we look at the next steps to becoming a first aid trainer. This includes reflection on blended learning and understanding practical and theoretical knowledge to bring your learning together. It also provides information on recognising and achieving competency, plus training guidance around observation and assessment, and evaluation of practice.
