About this course

Further to completion of the Care Certificate course, this course is designed to support health and social care workers, who are new to supporting individuals with a mental health condition, to achieve minimum standards where more specialist skills are needed.

The course begins by defining mental health. It then sets out how to support individuals with a mental health condition by relating the theory of the relevant care certificate standards to working practice. For example, ‘duty of care’ looks at legislation and the impact of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) for the individual, ‘Awareness of Mental Health and Dementia’ provides examples of mental health conditions and potential causes, and ‘health and safety’ explains the importance of risk assessment and mitigating risks.

In module 2, the final stage of the course, we look at scenarios and strategies that will strengthen the knowledge through examples of experience. The scenarios support each standard relevant to caring for individuals with a mental health condition.
