Course Aims
This course is part of the Careskills Academy Train the Trainer Programme. Whether you are completing just this course or the whole programme, you will still need to undergo observation and assessment with one of our experienced Assessors, to ensure that you are competent to deliver Moving and Handling training. Your observation and assessment will be carried out virtually.
Module 1
The course begins by explaining the processes, information and safeguards needed before initiating moving and handling training. This includes how to risk assess your training and the importance of health declarations. This module then establishes your underpinning knowledge by reflecting on the definition of moving and handling and the necessary relative guidance such as risk assessment, policy and procedures, and their review.
Module 2
Module 2 reviews what the law says about moving and handling, including the actions organisations must take to promote safety in the workplace. It also identifies the equipment in the workplace that must be inspected under the legislation.
Module 3
Module 3 reflects upon the knowledge regarding anatomy and physiology reinforcing training requirements. It shows how anatomy and physiology work together in the context of moving and handling particularly regarding how the back and spine work. This module also identifies the causes and signs of common injuries, including back issues, acquired when moving and handling.
Modules 4 and 5
Modules 4 and 5 examine the practicalities of moving and handling people and objects. Trainers must be able to convey information and demonstrate techniques. These modules cover good and safe practice, specific moves, transfers and handling aids, and basic lifting principles.
In the final stage of the course, we look at the next steps to becoming a moving and handling trainer. This includes reflection on blended learning and understanding practical and theoretical knowledge to bring your learning together. It also provides information on recognising and achieving competency, plus training guidance around observation and assessment, and evaluation of practice.
Downloadable resources are available in the Resource section of this course.
Guided Online Learning Hours: up to 3 hours, dependent on the student’s skills and abilities, followed by observation of teaching practice with a qualified Assessor.
