A school asthma policy should include:

  • Asthma register: detailing all the pupils that have asthma.
  • Named asthma lead: to manage your school’s asthma policy, including ensuring measures are in place so that children have immediate access to their inhalers.
  • Storage and access details: identifying where inhalers are stored, and accessed, including maintenance and disposal.
  • Asthma action plan: according to Asthma UK, someone with a personal asthma action plan is 4 times less likely to be hospitalised from an asthma-related incident.
  • Staff training: the provision of asthma training for school staff will keep their knowledge and skills updated and help create a safer environment for pupils with asthma.
  • Safe surroundings: in their asthma action plans, pupils’ asthma triggers will be recorded and, where possible, measures should be put in place by the school to ensure that the pupils don’t come into contact with these triggers.
  • Emergency action plan: the emergency procedure set out by the school to be carried out in the event of an asthma-related emergency.
