There are many types of epilepsy, each manifesting with different symptoms, though the most common types are:
- Focal Epilepsy – This is the most common type of epilepsy in adults, where seizures start in one specific part of the brain and can result in unusual feelings, twitching or confusion.
- Generalised Epilepsy – This is where seizures affect both sides of the brain, resulting in absence seizures and tonic-clonic seizures. Generalised Epilepsy is more common in children and teenagers, but can occur at any age.
- Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) – JME affects between 5 to 10% of people with epilepsy and can result in sudden jerks or twitches which is more common in the morning.
- Photosensitive Epilepsy – Photosensitive epilepsy is particularly common in young people and is triggered by flashing lights or certain visual patterns.
