‘Protected characteristics’ are types of discrimination. It is against the law to discriminate against someone because of the following characteristics:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Being pregnant or on maternity leave
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
