Q: What are the signs of dyslexia?

The signs of dyslexia can be different for each person. There are some general signs to look for in a pupil in your classroom: - Speed of processing – slow spoken and/or written language - Difficulty following instructions or forming answers to questions - Forgetting words - Poor concentration - Memory difficulties - Avoiding activities that involve reading Our Dyslexia Awareness course goes through the signs and symptoms to ensure your staff know how to spot them.

Q: How to diagnose dyslexia?

It can be hard to diagnose dyslexia as people with dyslexia can often find ways to work around their difficulties. However, as a teacher or teaching assistant, you can suspect dyslexia by noticing any of these problems: - Poor reading skills, despite having ‘normal’ intelligence -Poor writing and reading skills -Trouble finishing tests and assignments on time - Trouble memorising lists or phone numbers - Difficulty remembering the right names for things - Problems with directions or reading maps

Q: What does dyslexia look like?

There are many forms of dyslexia and not everyone has the same experiences with reading, writing and spelling. Nevertheless, most of those with dyslexia tend to have a hard time manipulating the sounds in words, reading might take them more time and they may jumble up words or write letters in reverse e.g. they could read or write the word ‘now’ as ‘won’ or ‘left’ as ‘felt’.

Dyslexia is a learning disability as it can cause problems such as reading, writing, spelling, and sometimes people with dyslexia can have difficulty processing and remembering information. However, it doesn’t affect intelligence.

Mental wellbeing in children and young people is just as important as physical wellbeing because wellbeing can impact relationships with their family and friends and how they interact with the world. It can allow children to think clearly, learn new skills and be socially active. Good mental wellbeing can help them cope with whatever the world throws at them, allow them to value who they are and grow into well-rounded healthy (both mentally and physically) adults.
