Q: What is child exploitation?

Child Exploitation is a type of abuse. When a child or young person is exploited they’re groomed by being given things, like gifts, drugs, money, status and affection. This is usually in exchange for carrying out a criminal activity, known as Child Criminal Exploitation or performing sexual activities, known as Child Sexual Exploitation.

Here are some examples of signs that may indicate harmful sexual behaviour: Taking younger children to 'secret' locations or hideaways, or engaging them in 'special' games Seeking out and spending an inordinate amount of time in the company of children younger than them. When a child does not want to be hugged or kissed, the parent insists. Using harsh or sexual words toward adults or children on a regular basis. Sharing sexual photographs of another person without their permission. Looking at sexual photos on the internet of children. Befriending a younger child to engage in sexual activity and asking them not to tell.
