About this course
Caring for patients with a tracheostomy requires all healthcare staff to have a sound understanding of best practices, especially if they are unfamiliar with them. Incorrect management and care can unfortunately lead to complications and negatively impact a patient’s daily life.
Our online Tracheostomy training course is designed to offer learners with a practical and theoretical understanding of tracheostomy care. It will familiarise participants with the different types of tracheostomy tubes and explore the relevant anatomy and physiology, enabling staff to provide appropriate care and management of both the site and tube.

What is a tracheostomy?: Clearly recognise what a tracheostomy is, understand the various medical indications for its insertion and its role in patient care.

Accountability and consent: Discuss the professional accountability and legal implications surrounding tracheostomy care, including the importance of obtaining informed consent from patients or authorised representatives.

Anatomy and physiology: Accurately label and describe the relevant anatomical structures of the respiratory system involved in tracheostomy and explain the key physiological principles that underpin effective airway management.

Types of tracheostomy tubes: Identify and differentiate between the different types of tracheostomy tubes, understanding the unique characteristics, applications and components of each.

Complications and troubleshooting: Identify potential complications associated with tracheostomy care, engage in discussion about their causes and preventative measures and apply troubleshooting strategies to address issues promptly and safely.

Nursing care: Demonstrate familiarity with a range of nursing care procedures including suction, humidification, documentation & infection control, dressing change and the procedures for inner cannula and full tube changes.

Life with tracheostomy: Understand the impact of a tracheostomy on a patient’s daily life, exploring strategies for effective communication, swallowing and how to integrate person centred care principles throughout the patient journey.

Emergency procedures and your role and responsibility: Discuss critical emergency procedures related to tracheostomy care, clearly defining your own role and responsibilities within these scenarios.
