Course Aims: 

This eLearning course aims to introduce you to the topic of safeguarding children and young people.

This course begins by defining the meaning of a child, young person and looked after child.  It then introduces the statutory framework concerning the rights, safeguarding and protection of a child or young person. This includes the Children Act 1989, The Children Act 2004 and Sexual Offences Act 2003.

You will then consider the definitions of safeguarding, protection, child maltreatment and explore the risk factors that can make a child or young person more vulnerable to abuse.  You will explore the four main types of abuse; emotional, physical, sexual and neglect and maltreatment and signs that may indicate they are taking place.  You will then go on to explore other forms of child abuse and maltreatment, including child trafficking, female genital mutilation and radicalisation as well and signs that may indicate they are taking place. The course concludes with an explanation of what you must do if you suspect a child, young person (met in any circumstances) is being abused or neglected.
